We are seeking a User Interaction Designer to join our development team and work across world leading products. This is an excellent opportunity for a designer who is committed to designing effective user experiences and working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders.

The UK Hydrographic Office is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data suppliers and partners, surveying and charting the world s oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities, including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.
The role
The User Experience team are located in the wider Research, Design & Innovation team and seek to provide value to new concepts and product propositions through using research, design and concept development.
The User Interaction Designer will work collaboratively, with different delivery teams to deliver an increase in quality, consistency and exceptional user experience of the UKHO s products, services and interfaces. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development of the most suitable design of all new and changing products in collaboration with wider stakeholders to provide the most effective user experience. You will also be responsible for implementing the most suitable approach to User Interaction prototyping and end user testing, often working collaboratively with development teams.
What we are looking for:
As an Interaction Designer, you will enjoy seeking and designing solutions to problems and be able to effectively communicate your ideas and concepts to a wide range of stakeholders. In your application we will also be looking for:
- Experience of designing solutions to meet customer needs.
- Experience or understanding of usability testing.
- Knowledge and experience of HTML/CSS.
- Experience or understanding of visual design with examples.
- Appreciation of Design Principles and Process (e.g., Pattern Library and Design System).
- Experience or understanding of wireframing and prototyping tools (for example Figma and Axure).
- Experience or understanding of UX deliverables – e.g., storyboards, user flows, process flows and journey maps.
An important aspect of this role involves regular spoken interaction with members of the public, the ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate spoken English is therefore essential.
