Job Purpose: The post holder will be responsible for raising awareness of and engagement in all Students Union (SU) services and activities across our three campuses. They will work with the Head of Marketing and Communications on development and delivery of communications plans and strategies, including carrying out the Marketing Action Plan for our GSU Plan 2026.
There is a need for a particular focus on digital marketing in this role. The postholder will have the freedom to create a social media strategy inline with GSU Plan 2026 for GSU s central and sub brand/activity channels for they and their team to manage. Alongside this, the postholder and their team will be responsible for other aspects of digital marketing (e.g. email communication).
The Marketing and Communications Manager will be responsible for delivering all marketing provision for the Union, providing a service and support to various teams, and managing stakeholders effectively.

Responsible for: Marketing and Communications Coordinator, Commercial Marketing Coordinator
Location/s: Mainly based at Greenwich Campus; travel required to Avery Hill and Medway campuses
Hours of work: Full-time, 35 hours per week
Salary: £31,215 – £35,174 per annum full-time
Level 2 on Union pay scale, incl. London Weighting
Department/Service Marketing and Communications team
1 Duties and key responsibilities
Marketing and communications delivery
Support the Head of M&C to deliver integrated brand communication plans to maximise the impact to members and stakeholders, reporting regularly on its success
Contribute to and/or write communication plans, reports and papers for internal and external committees/stakeholders, as directed by the Head of M&C
Develop, lead and implement the SU s social media strategy, supporting Union staff with to deliver effective communications
Support the Engagement and Opportunities and Commercial Services teams with dedicated and targets campaigns to increase participation, footfall and income
Working with the Head of M&C and Senior Designer, produce and distribute content through digital channels (screens, social media, email and website), and hard copy materials across all three University campuses in accordance with brand and content guidelines (e.g. design materials, copywriting)
Work with the Marcomms team – sometimes taking responsibility – to produce central SU marketing materials and communications for a range of audiences, working with key stakeholders, Senior Leadership team and/or Full-time Officers where relevant to ensure they are clear, useful, and timely
Work with Union staff to produce and manage detailed production schedules for all communications pieces, including budgeting and distribution methods
Manage external providers and suppliers of communications support where necessary
Manage and develop the SU s web presence and database on Membership Solutions Limited
Help to develop partnerships both internally and externally and through this maximise engagement with members and customers
Work with the Head of Marketing and Communications on major publicity and public relations campaigns, and management of the press where necessary
Day-to-day operational control of Marketing budget, particularly expenditure on materials, digital costs (e.g. social media, content management system), and student staff
Assist with work as directed by the Head of M&C in their work as Data protection officer, ensuring the SU is compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation
Assist with work as directed by the Head of M&C in their work as crisis communications lead, supporting them and the Senior Leadership Team, and/or deputising for this role where needed
Stakeholder management
Effectively work with internal and external stakeholders to provide the most effective service for the SU, and ensure that service is provided and conducted in a timely manner
Support student development by working with relevant teams to deliver effective training for student leaders
Organise Union presence at, and be an ambassador for the SU at internal and external events (e.g. University Open Days, conferences)
Work with Union stakeholders to develop communication campaigns appropriate to events and activities, supporting them with ideas and effective organisation for delivery
Keep abreast of key changes in marketing practices in order to deliver the most effective service strategy for the SU
Contribute to relevant University steering groups, including, but not limited to the Digital Content Accessibility Group and National Student Survey Communications
Deputise for Head of Marcomms within University Committees where needed
Line management
Responsible for the recruitment, induction and management of the M&C Coordinator and Commercial Marketing Coordinator, providing personal development opportunities for them to grow and flourish
Line manage direct reports in the Marketing and Communications team in line with the policies and procedures of the Union
Set targets for direct report/s in line with the strategic/operational plans of the Union, managing their performance and development
Be aware of and ensure that all staff are aware of the importance of supporting our Diversity plans and that this is integrated into every aspect of the department s activities
Insights and systems
Support staff on the SU s strategy by delivering training and implementing systems to monitor progress
Working with the Head of M&C, monitor, record and analyse engagement data from across the Union related to communications in line with Marketing Action Plan to report to Board subcommittee
Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to commission, evaluate and interpret research data for programmes and services and to monitor the impact of all campaigns and external facing activities
Keep abreast of industry trends, competitor strategy and performance and use analytical frameworks, strategic business models and tools to interpret and translate the results and to keep ahead of developments in the field of marketing, maintaining professional links with the industry and incorporating fresh approaches into marketing plans
Student Media
Ensure support is provided for all aspects of the production of student media, working with the relevant staff and Student leaders to ensure quality and legally complaint output

EXPERIENCE
Evidence of:
Delivering marketing and communications activity successfully for a relevant organisation
Managing people to deliver impactful marketing and communication activity
Managing a direct report/s, supporting their personal and professional development
successfully delivering operational plans, organising direct reports, and working effectively with staff on all levels
developing, delivering and communicating project plans with colleagues and of managing the expectations of stakeholders
Managing social media channels (e.g. creating content, scheduling, monitoring engagement)
Supporting others to do so to produce tailored and appropriate content and maximise engagement
Using the Membership Solutions Limited system or similar for website, content and activity management
Creating, phasing and managing budgets effectively, using resources to get good value for money
Acting as an ambassador for an organisation at an appropriate level
Working on behalf of a range of diverse stakeholders
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Clear communication skills face to face and on the phone or email
Ability to troubleshoot difficult situations, and deal with them calmly, efficiently and effectively
Ability to write copy as well as succinct documents

Self-motivated with the confidence to work alone but can also work co-operatively and flexibly as part of a team

Proven ability to use Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator to a good standard for digital and hard copy materials
Excellent written and verbal communications skills
Operational understanding of websites (e.g. working with HTML, CSS, content management systems) and web-based communications
Excellent IT skills and the ability to use a wide range of Office and other applications
KNOWLEDGE
A strong practical understanding of editorial guidelines and policies, with a proven ability to identify and manage issues that may challenge or conflict with editorial compliance
Knowledge or willingness to learn about regulatory requirements and best practice guidance relating to the General Data Protection Regulation
